The Repeated Message of Divine Awareness
Allah is now telling us that every action you do is inspired by your directing towards the Kaaba. You're directing yourself towards the legacy of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam and the legacy of Ibrahim alaihi wasallam—truth above all else, truth regardless of what comes your way. And Allah is not unaware of what you're doing.
In this series, I've been giving reflections ayah by ayah through the passage where Allah talks about the change of the qibla, which led to the profound legacy of restoring the purpose of the house of Allah in Mecca. We're still working through this passage, and now Allah is going to say something that is almost identical to what He said before. In ayah number 144, He said: "Turn your faces towards the sacred masjid. And wherever you all may be, I'll make sure that you turn your faces in its direction." Then He says: "No doubt about it, those who were given the book before already know this is the truth from their master, and Allah is not unaware of what they do." The last comment after the change of qibla pointed specifically at them—Allah knows what those who've been given the book are doing despite knowing this truth.
But now we've reached ayah number 149. Let's read this again: "And wherever you may come out from, turn your face in the direction of the sacred masjid towards the Kaaba. And know that it's the truth from your master. And certainly it is the truth from your master." Previously, we found that the people of the book knew that it was the truth from their master. Here again, "know that it's the truth from your master." And just like before, "Allah is not unaware." This time, however, He says, "He's not unaware of what you're all doing." Before, He said the people of the book—He's not unaware of what they're doing. Now He says He's not unaware of what you're doing.
The Subtle Transition That Changes Everything
This subtle and powerful transition tells you everything. It tells you the entire purpose of this passage. It wasn't just to point out what the people of the book are doing. It was there to point out what they're doing so that you make sure you don't replicate any aspect of that behavior yourself. You don't become like them. You're new to this direction. This is not a big deal for you—it's a big deal for them. But now that you've turned in this direction, you better realize, you better recognize that everything you do now, not just turning in the direction of the Kaaba, every action you take now has a direction and has a purpose.
Turning towards the Kaaba is a very purposeful, intentful, mindful thing. It's not a mindless thing. If you're in the middle of nowhere, you figure out the direction towards which you're going to pray, right? It's a mindful act. It's not a mindless act like breathing or walking. There's purposefulness and there's intent behind it. Allah is now telling us that every action you do is inspired by your directing towards that Kaaba. You're directing yourself towards the legacy of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam and the legacy of Ibrahim alaihi wasallam. Truth above all else. Truth regardless of what comes your way.
The Real Contest: Truth Versus People
I told you before that the underlying theme in this passage is a contest between commitment to the truth on the one end and commitment to people and the pressure that comes from people on the other end. Those are the actual false gods, not the idols around the Kaaba. They're just a surface. Underneath them is the people that support those idols. It's the people that call towards falsehood. It's the people among Bani Isra'il who don't even apparently believe in idol worship and yet they are opposed to the truth. Those are the actual idols.
So you'll notice in this passage once again the same point being hammered. How? A third time in the next ayah, ayah 150: "Wherever you may come out from, turn your face in the direction of the sacred masjid. And wherever all of you may be, turn yourselves in its direction." Three times. Allah could say that one time and we'd get it. It doesn't have to be repeated three times. But Allah is getting the point across to us that there's something much deeper beyond the surface of just turning towards the Kaaba. And look at how Allah reinforces it: "So people will have no case against you. People will have no case against you except those who do wrong."
The Warning Against Empty Ritual
Meaning that on judgment day, one of the implications of this is that people will look at you and say: "These people used to turn towards the Kaaba, but everything else they were just like us. They didn't change their direction in their behaviors, their mannerisms. They didn't change their direction in their morality and their ethics and the way they conduct business. In the way they deal with family matters and in the way they deal with conflict. They were just like us. We gossiped and they gossiped. We did backbiting and they did backbiting. We were cutting each other and they were cutting each other. We cheated in business, they cheated in business. There was no difference between us. The only thing was they would take a five-minute break and turn towards the Kaaba and do some exercise. That was the only difference."
Allah says: "People will have a case against you. So turn in this direction and people will not have a case against you." But then He gives you the real instruction: "Don't be afraid of people. Be afraid of me. Therefore, don't be afraid of people. Be afraid of me." In other words, when you're praying and you've said Allahu Akbar and you're facing the Kaaba, you're not fearing people. You're just praying. You forget about people. But when does the pressure from people come back? As soon as the prayer is done. Allah says for that: "Show me. Don't be afraid of them. Be afraid of me."
The Favor of Allah: The Open Secret
What do you think my name is like? This is the most beautiful secret in these ayat—the open secret. "So that I can complete my favor upon you." In the more immediate sense, the favor that Allah completed was that He cleansed the Kaaba physically. He destroyed the idols. He brought victory. Muslims were turning in its direction every single day in Medina while it was surrounded by idols. They knew it had to be cleansed. And Allah completed His favor and brought that victory.
But there's a broader meaning here—a very powerful one. In all of our lives, standing up against the pressure of people is like being thrown in a fire. I said that deliberately, drawing from the story of Ibrahim, but Allah will make that fire cool. Allah will complete his favor upon you. What do you think my name is like? Yusuf's father told him: "Allah will complete his favor on you just like He did on your fathers." And he mentioned Ibrahim—how did Allah complete his favor on Ibrahim? He made fires cold. He made knives refuse to cut. He brought water in the middle of the desert. He reunited him with his family. That man represents the completion of Allah's favor on a person. And now this entire story takes us back to that same exact phrase that is originally associated with our father Ibrahim. What do you think my name is like?
So there's the contrast once again. Commitment to guidance and fear of people don't go hand in hand. They're incompatible with each other. You can't have both. There's going to be a conflict, and you'll have to decide. Is it the fear of people that is going to drive you? Is that going to be your direction? Or is it going to be the commitment to guidance? And if it is the commitment to guidance, then—and I pray that's true for all of us—Allah will complete his favor upon you. May Allah complete his favor upon all of us.
